In Pingxi, the sky becomes an altar of fire. The night is dark and cool; the air hums with expectation. You write your wish on rice paper—ink bleeding like breath—and hold the lantern as it fills with light. Around you, hundreds of others do the same. Flames bloom within fragile paper; the valley glows amber and gold. When the wind shifts, you release. The lantern rises, trembling, spinning, climbing—one more heartbeat joining the constellation of hope. For a few minutes, the sky is alive with moving stars. Some drift together, others alone. The crowd falls silent, watching prayers ascend into the mist. The lanterns fade slowly, swallowed by cloud. You stand beneath the dark, your hands warm with memory.
